Coastal and Offshore Modelling

Comprehensive modelling of coastal, estuary and offshore areas is used in conjunction with field measurements to understand hydrodynamic, water quality and sedimentation processes and predict impacts of proposed works activities in coastal zones.

BMT WBM utilises a range of state-of-the-art modelling software to simulate these processes, including detailed two and three dimensional flexible mesh systems developed in-house (TUFLOW-FV).

This modelling is validated to the measured data and applied to wide-ranging projects such as storm tide investigations, coastal zone and estuary management assessments, baseline environmental condition monitoring and environmental impact assessments relating to dredging, port development, river entrance works, sand bypassing and related activities.

Cairns Region Storm Tide Study (Queensland)

BMT WBM undertook a modelling study to assess the risks posed by coastal inundation in the Cairns Region. This involved modelling of tropical cyclones and mapping of inundation hazards, examination and mapping of community vulnerability and risk, and development of strategies to manage these risks.  It utilised TUFLOW-FV, our in-house flexible mesh modelling system. Extensive validation of the model systems was undertaken by comparing wind, wave and water level predictions with historical records of a range of tropical cyclones.

Murray River Mouth Morphological Modelling (SA)

Modelling of the Murray River mouth, Coorong and Lower Lakes have formed the basis of advice provided to several South Australian government agencies over the past 10 years to assist them in managing the network of barrages to ensure maintenance of the environmental health in this Ramsar listed area.  A comprehensive flexible mesh model has been developed and validated that covers the entire region and caters for the coastal wave, water level and sand transport processes, morphological changes at the mouth, water quality along the Coorong and in the lakes and water balance processes of evaporation and barrage flows.  The model was used to develop mouth dredging strategies during the period of prolonged drought to maintain an open mouth.

Under Keel Clearance Hydrodynamic and Wave Modelling, Port of Melbourne (Victoria)

BMT WBM assisted the Victorian Channels Authority to assess the feasibility of establishing a dynamic under keel clearance (DUKC) system for ship navigation through the Rip, Port Phillip Bay, with computer modelling and derivation of wave and current algorithms for use in a real time predictive manner.  2D/3D finite element hydrodynamic modelling was undertaken, from which current speed prediction algorithms along the shipping channel were derived.  SWAN wave modelling was used to derive frequency and direction dependent wave prediction relationships between the reference wave recorder and locations along the shipping channel, taking account of the strong tidal currents.
